Can I be candid?
The Church at large is failing its mission!
Sure, there are some churches growing, and many meeting the natural needs of the people in their communities. And these are good things, but like Jesus said, "You should continue doing the former, but also do the latter (justice and righteousness)."
So what aren't we doing?
"Go, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you." Matthew 28:19-20
First, a convert is not a disciple. Second, mentoring someone is not discipleship, though it is included. Third, if your pastor is doing all this on their own, they have not made disciples, but students.
Discipleship is training someone how to replace you. Jesus taught His disciples that very thing. Now, our job is to train others to be like Jesus.
What does it mean to be like Jesus?
Simple, do what He did, live how He lived, and do it all so that others benefit.
These training classes teach you to commune with God, to walk in the power of His Spirit, to become consistent in your walk so that you mature in Christ, and have you do the things we are learning in each class. This all leads up to you being sent out to bring more in. After a few times through, you now begin to have disciples under you, because I can only disciple so many at a time.
